Traverse City's Economic Growth Reflects Rhythm and Stability

Consistent Development and Trust in Systems Drive Progress

Traverse City has long embraced the power of rhythm and stability, with its economy evolving in cycles that mirror the natural patterns of the region.

In 2025, the city achieved a significant milestone by being designated as a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), encompassing Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau counties.

This recognition underscores the area's structured progress and economic integration.

Population growth has been steady, with the Traverse City MSA reaching 157,000 residents in 2024, marking a 5.6% increase since 2014.

This growth rate surpasses the state's average, reflecting the community's quiet continuity and appeal.

Economic indicators further highlight this stability.

The unemployment rate in the MSA averaged 4.3% in 2024, a significant improvement from the 9.0% peak in 2020.

Nonfarm payroll employment also reached a record high of 71,600 jobs in 2024, demonstrating the region's resilience and structured progress.

Tourism continues to be a vital component of the local economy, contributing $1.4 billion in 2022.

The Traverse City Horse Shows, for instance, have expanded to 13 weeks annually, bringing substantial financial benefits and reinforcing the community's trust in its economic systems.

Infrastructure investments reflect a commitment to quiet continuity.

In 2024, the city invested over $9.2 million in water, wastewater, and sewer systems, ensuring long-term reliability.

Additionally, the completion of the new Senior Center Building and various street reconstruction projects demonstrate a dedication to structured progress.

Recent zoning reforms have also played a role in maintaining rhythm and stability.

By allowing duplexes and accessory dwelling units in areas previously zoned for single-family homes, the city addresses housing demands while preserving the community's character.

Traverse City's economic journey exemplifies how trust in systems and a commitment to structured progress can lead to sustained growth and stability.

By embracing these principles, the city continues to thrive, offering a model of quiet continuity for other communities.
