Exploring subway systems and underground transit options

As Traverse City continues to evolve, the focus on enhancing urban transportation has become increasingly prominent.

While the city may not be considering subway systems or underground transit, significant strides are being made to improve mobility and accessibility for all residents.

In December 2025, Traverse City adopted a Complete Streets policy, aiming to design roadways that accommodate drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and individuals with disabilities.

This initiative reflects a commitment to creating a more walkable and equitable community.

Additionally, the city has been proactive in upgrading its infrastructure.

In August 2025, the Michigan Department of Transportation invested $1.9 million to enhance traffic signals and install ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps at key intersections, improving safety and efficiency.

Public transportation has also seen advancements.

The Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA) offers services like the Bayline, a free bus route running seven days a week, and Link on Demand, a ride-hailing service providing affordable transportation options.

These efforts underscore Traverse City's dedication to fostering a comprehensive and inclusive transportation network.

By prioritizing diverse modes of transit and infrastructure improvements, the city is paving the way for a more connected and accessible future.
